Environment Watch: Recycle used cartridges to raise money for schools
(… this article, although slanted towards Canadians, contains tips that are in many other countries; please use Google, or another search engine, to find similar recycling stations in your community …)
School will be out all summer, but its doors are never shut on ideas to strengthen education – and similarly, its doors are never closed on ways to help the environment.
So here’s a worthy initiative for both individuals and for small businesses that cleverly combines the two:
If your empty ink and toner cartridges are tossed into the garbage they soon become pollutants in landfill. Instead, on the up-coming Recycle for Education program, drop these cartridges off in a designated recycle bin at your neighbourhood Staples Business Depot. With every eligible cartridge collected, the company will donate one dollar to participating schools in your community.
“Recycling sets an excellent example for children,” says Alessandra Saccal, spokesperson for the retailer. “It illustrates environmentally-friendly behaviour and if this Recycle for Education program inspires the country the way we think it will, an estimated $425,000 will be distributed to almost 700 Canadian schools this year.”
Encourage your school to participate too. More information is available online at http://www.recyclefored.ca. Registration begins Spring 2008.
