How Hybrid Cars Work: A Brief Glimpse of the Car of the Future

More and more of us are now considering selling our old gas-guzzling cars and instead buying a more cutting edge type of car that stands to cut your fuel bill in half. These new line of cars are most commonly referred to as hybrids. Add to that the fact that the new hybrids release less greenhouse gasses into the atmosphere than conventional cars. That means, the more of us there are driving hybrid cars, everyone benefits.

Now that you know about hybrid cars you might also be interested to learn a bit about what makes them work. I will give you a short introduction. We will skip Hybrid car history in this article.

In the simplest of terms, hybrids run on both gas and electric power sources to power the car. For starters, the electric portion of the engine is used when you’re idling and the gasoline engine is automatically shut off. At these times that the car is purely running on electricity. This helps to explain why you can hardly hear a hybrid while it’s idling in a driveway or at an intersection. This will also explain why it can effectively conserve fuel consumption. Once you step on the accelerator, the gas engine powers back on. There are also hybrid cars that can run purely on electric mode. This is very useful who don’t venture too far from home with their cars. This could make it so you don’t even have to put fuel into your car for longer than you ever imagined possible.

Of course, in a hybrid, long trips will require fuel. You can even say that the gasoline will be used for back up power in case the battery is discharged. That’s all there is– a battery to hold backup energy, a generator, a conventional combustion engine, a gas tank, plus a motor that’s electric. That is why it is called a ‘Hybrid’.

Now that you know how hybrid cars work, you hopefully have a better idea of why they’re so popular. You will not only cut down on the amount of fuel you put into your gas tank each month, but it will also allow you to do even more to cut down on global warming.
