Only in Canada you say? Pity.
This is not a posting about the old Red Rose Tea commercial that suggested you could only get that great tea in Canada. No, this is more sinister.
I just found out that the use of 2,4-D is still legal in Canada. It has been banned in other nations, but still legal here.
What is 2,4-D?
2,4-Dichlorophenoxyacetic Acid (2,4-D) is a chlorinated phenoxy herbicide. 2,4-D has been shown to cause cellular mutations which can lead to cancer. It also contains contains dioxins, a group of chemicals known to be hazardous to human health and to the environment.
Health Canada has an Information Page about this product. I urge you to check it out. Then, become involved.
To quote from the Health Canada site, “The PMRA has reviewed the comments and information received in response to the proposed regulatory decision for lawn and turf uses of 2,4-D. Based on the available scientific information, 2,4-D is acceptable for use on lawns and turf with specific label directions for use and handling.“. And this stuff has dioxins in it!
Please study this web site and others like it. Cut back on your use of man made fertilizers and insecticides. Use more natural methods.
p.s. For more info on dioxins and furans, from the government’s point of view, see this site. If you do not live in Canada, use Google to find comparable information in your homeland.
