5 Simple Tips To Help You Save Money

Posted on Friday 10 October 2008

You know how it is, there’s never enough money left in the days or weeks before your next pay check arrives.

Even more so with the constantly growing fuel prices, ever increasing food prices and the economic meltdown we seem to be facing.

But are there ways to save money?

And still live a normal, healthy life.

Check out these ideas to save money easily:

1. Reduce your credit card usage

The standard advice is to stop using credit cards altogether. But since you’re human, cutting down on using credit cards will likely be OK. Over time, you should aim to pay off some or all of your card debt. Find out the highest rate you’re paying and start with that card. And if you’re able to transfer your current card debt to a 0% card to help you do this, go for it.

2. Trade down

Most grocery stores have a range of their own products that has been formulated to be as close to the more expensive brand leaders as possible. Give them a try next time you shop. And also check out some of the really basic lines as well – some of these are very close to the regular things you buy – milk is milk for instance. Others (such as tasteless tuna) aren’t, so be careful the first time you buy these in case they’re a waste of cash.

3. Shop less often

Bulk buy the things you know you’ll use on a regular basis. Boring stuff like toilet rolls, canned foods, etc. And if you have to make a shopping trip, be sure you’ve eaten first. It may sound weird, but you won’t make as many impulse buys this way.

4. Don’t impulse buy

Gee. These are getting harder to do! If you’re prone to impulse buying, leave your credit cards at home and make sure anyone you shop with is told in no uncertain terms that they can’t “sub” you “until you get the cash out”. If that seems like a complete impossibility, stop your trip to the shops altogether – go cold turkey if need be, but quit shopping for a while, regardless.

5. Seek help

Talk with friends – they have likely seen a pattern develop where you go into auto-pilot and just buy things. Maybe you shop to give yourself a lift. No matter what the reason, discover what it is and work to reduce it.
