A separation in a marriage can occur for many reasons, but the end result is always the same.  Isolation and loneliness are difficult to cope with regardless of the reasons for your separation. Frequently partners who find themselves separated because the marriage isn’t going well, face additional challenges and hardships as they try to discover the best course of action: divorce or reconciliation. Fortunately, there are steps that you can take in coping with marriage separation that will make the time apart a little easier to bear. 

The Need to Socialize

If your spouse has been the number one social partner in your life, you will need to find a new way to meet your social needs while coping with marriage separation. Your friends are a critical connection to the outside world particularly if you are staying at home to care for your kids. You are allowed to leave the kids with Grandma or a babysitter so you can spend some time with a good friend for a couple of hours one afternoon. It is an ideal time for you to seek support for the challenges you are facing and talk about coping with marriage separation. 

Gain Perspective

For some couples, coping with marriage separation means allowing yourselves time to sit back and evaluate the relationship from a new perspective. A separation does not alway result in divorce, but can be used to work through hurt feelings and prepare to come back together as a couple. Spend time with your children, reassuring them that both parents still love them just as much. Occassionally, kids misunderstand the separation and think that if spouses can leave each other, parents may leave the children as well. Talk to your children about their fears, and never stop reassuring them of your constant presence in their lives.

Couples living apart are often overwhelmed at times, by the challenges of the separation. Take time to gain a new perspective on your marriage while seeking the support of your friends or family in dealing with the separation. Don’t forget that your children are also coping with marriage separation in their own way and help them in whatever way you can. By following these steps, you can make the separation a bit easier to handle and pave the way for a positive outcome at the end.
