Many car enthusiasts today make their vehicle look unique by installing custom tires and wheels. These days it is not rare to see these combinations costing over $1,500 per WHEEL! Multiply that by four and you have made a sizeable investment that warrants protecting.
If you are detailing the entire vehicle, then the tires and wheels should already be clean. You will probably find that you will have to wash your tires and wheels more often than the rest of the vehicle since they suffer from far more abuse on a day to day basis from road grime, brake dust and road tar.
The procedure in caring for your wheels is no different than caring for the rest of your car. Wash, clean, polish, and protect still hold true. When washing your wheels you will want to use a detergent, then a wheel cleaner, polish them and then add a protectant.
We recommend breaking the process for cleaning your wheels down to smaller steps. For example, clean the right rear wheel rim and tire, then the right front wheel rim and tire, and so on. This will help to simplify the overall procedure.
A lot of detailers disagree on what to do next. Should the tire or wheel be detailed next?
Our suggestion is to deep clean the wheel first, then clean the tire, polish and protect the tire, then polish and protect the wheel. By doing it this way any run off from the tire can be polished off the wheel at the end of the detailing process.
Whichever way you decide, all the pros recommend that you do one tire and wheel combination at a time after washing. This will prevent cleaner from drying on the wheel or the tire which can cause a stain. If you have driven the car, always be sure to let the tires and wheels cool down before you work on them. The heat can cause some of the cleaning compounds to react more intensely and can damage your wheels, especially magnesium or aluminum wheels.
